Job Description & Requirements - Specialty: First Assist - Discipline: RN - Start Date: 07/28/2025 - Duration: 13 weeks - 36 hours per week - Shift: 12 hours, days - Employment Type: Travel Job Title: Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) Location: 5176 Hill Rd E, Lakeport, CA 95453 Shift: Day Shift, 3x12-Hour (06:45 AM – 6:45 PM) Schedule: Block Schedule Job Overview: We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) to support surgical teams in a fast-paced acute care environment. The RNFA will practice under the direct supervision of the surgeon during surgical procedures, performing first assistant duties to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This role requires strict adherence to safety protocols and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations. Key Responsibilities: - Serve as the first assistant to the surgeon during surgical interventions, providing retraction, homeostasis, knot tying, and other technical assistance as needed. - Work independently in the role of first assistant; not concurrently performing scrub nurse duties except in extreme emergencies. - Assist on surgical cases where the use of an assistant surgeon is optional or where the assistant’s role is predictably limited. - Adhere to all universal protocols, infection control policies, and surgical safety standards. - Monitor patients’ conditions intraoperatively, ensuring compliance with safety and clinical guidelines. - Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to support patient care and surgical workflow. Required Qualifications: - Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license. - BLS (American Heart Association) certification. - ACLS certification. - PALS certification. - CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) certification. - Minimum 3 years’ experience as an RN in the Operating Room with exposure to both circulator and scrub roles. - Experience working in a community hospital setting required; trauma level I or II experience preferred. - Ability to perform under pressure in emergency and trauma situations. - Proficiency with Epic charting system required. Clinical Skills & Competencies: - Proficient in gynecologic, podiatry, orthopedic, general surgery, pediatric surgery, neurology, bariatrics, and thoracic surgical procedures. - Skilled in administration of blood products, cardiac monitoring, conscious sedation monitoring, specimen handling, peripheral IV insertion, wound management, and urinary catheterization. - Familiarity with equipment such as electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources, Hana Table, and Steris. - Knowledge of laser safety, radiation safety, and infection control protocols. - Ability to manage surgical emergencies including code response, malignant hyperthermia, and latex allergy. Work Environment: - Surgical unit with 4 operating rooms. - Patient population includes adolescents, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics. - Average daily surgical volume: 14 cases. - Interdisciplinary support services available Scheduling: - Patient ratio: 1:1 (day, night, weekends). - Weekend rotation required (every other weekend). - Two 24-hour weekend call shifts per month. - Orientation: 40 hours. - Block schedule with 3 twelve-hour day shifts. - Pre-approved time off: 2 requests.
